Big Ben outplays RG3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers watched opponents panic when preparing for Robert Griffin III and vowed not to suffer the same identity crisis.

"We didn't want to get too creative," defensive end Brett Keisel said. "We just wanted to play the way we know how."

Besides, why mess with a good thing?

Wearing throwback jerseys that made them resemble hulking bumblebees, the Steelers swarmed Washington's precocious star in a 27-12 victory on Sunday.

Griffin completed just 16 of 34 passes for 177 yards and a score while managing 8 yards rushing, finding little room to showcase his brilliance against a unit used to having its way when a youngster is calling plays in the other huddle.

The Steelers (4-3) improved to 14-1 against rookie quarterbacks since 2004, doing to Griffin what they've done to the likes of Eli Manning and Joe Flacco.

"It is very frustrating," Griffin said. "You want to go out, be successful, execute plays and have everything work for you and then when you have a day like today when you have almost nothing work for you."

Griffin got little help from his receivers. The Redskins (3-5) dropped 10 passes and the Steelers kept the NFL's top rushing team under wraps despite playing without injured safety Troy Polamalu.

Washington ran for a season-low 86 yards while Griffin's longest run came on a seven-yard sprint in the first quarter.

"He wasn't running all over the place," Pittsburgh linebacker Larry Foote said. "The front seven got challenged by (Steelers coach) Mike (Tomlin) all week and they delivered."

Ben Roethlisberger had no such issues against Washington's depleted defense, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns as the Steelers won consecutive games for the first time this season.

"It's fun having so many weapons and being able to throw to anybody," said Roethlisberger, who spread 24 completions to nine different receivers.

Jonathan Dwyer added 107 yards rushing in his second NFL start while Heath Miller caught four passes for 46 yards and his sixth touchdown of the season. Pittsburgh scored on its first four possessions to take control early and had little trouble moving above .500.

Suddenly, the team that looked sluggish during early losses to Oakland and Tennessee appears to be its normal, dangerous self in a wide-open AFC.

"This is our story and we're writing it," Foote said.

Something Griffin is trying to do in the nation's capital. The second overall pick in last April's draft has taken the league by storm, his dazzling playmaking turning the moribund Redskins into one of the league's more compelling teams.

It all came to a crashing halt on a wet, raw day at Heinz Field.

Washington did its best to create space for Griffin, at one point sending him out as a wide receiver. He sprinted down the sideline but was flagged for pass interference while trying to grab Josh Morgan's wobbly pass, another mistake by the Redskins on an afternoon full of them

"I guess it was just a bad day for us," Washington wide receiver Leonard Hankerson said. "We didn't make those plays."

Even a pregame surprise from veteran linebacker London Fletcher didn't help. Fletcher overcame head and hamstring issues to play in his 232nd consecutive game, the longest active streak in the NFL. His presence, however, did little to buoy Washington's floundering defense against the balanced Steelers.

Roethlisberger continued to thrive in new offensive coordinator Todd Haley's system while Dwyer, starting in place of injured Rashard Mendenhall, became the first Steelers running back to top 100 yards in consecutive games in four years.

Nicknamed "the minivan" by former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, Dwyer ripped off a series of runs through gaping holes that kept the Redskins off-balance.

"I was just going off of how (the offensive line) was playing," Dwyer said. "They were playing physical so I brought my physicality to the game as well."

Pittsburgh wasted little time putting the pressure on, racing to a 20-6 halftime lead. Each drive seemed to follow the same pattern. Dwyer would soften up the middle of the Washington defense by bulling up the gut and Roethlisberger would spread the ball to anyone willing to catch it.

He hit little-used Leonard Pope for his first touchdown of the game and found Miller for a 7-yard score. When Roethlisberger flipped the ball to Will Johnson from a yard out midway through the third quarter to make it 27-9, the Steelers were in complete command.

Washington mustered little the rest of the way and eventually lost its composure.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall was ejected in the fourth quarter after getting in the face of an official, and Griffin ended the day with a simple kneel down on the Redskins' last possession, eager to get out of the rain and away from the worst performance of his short career.

"We lost the game, that's all that matter," Griffin said. "You're judged by wins and losses. I feel as bad as anyone else in that locker room right now."

NOTES: Washington TE Chris Cooley, re-signed by the team last week after Fred Davis was lost for the season with a torn Achilles, played sporadically. He did not catch a pass but was targeted once by Griffin ... The Steelers improved to 400-253-2 since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the most by any NFL franchise during that span ... Pittsburgh S Ryan Clark left in the third quarter with a concussion and did not return.

Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus

By Eugene Kim

As we all learned from Disney's Ratatouille, anyone can cook?even this hapless author? with the help of the Internet. Smartphones and tablets make every recipe imaginable just a tap away, but if you're in the kitchen, it's more like a dirty and dangerous tap away for your delicate electronic device. Enter the Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus ($39.99 list), a sturdy stand that keeps your tablet safe from food splatters, with an oversized stylus that makes it easy to interact with your virtual recipes.

The matte black rubber and chrome highlights give the Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus a clean look that should blend nicely with most modern kitchens. The circular base has a sloped top, with a lip that juts out from the front. The stand is made for Apple iPads, but really it works with any tablet that is less than a half an inch thick. There are two orientations for use, either horizontal on the sloped top of the stand or propped upright in the lip. The oversized stylus features a grippy rubber body with a thick metal end, making for a comfortable balance in your hand. Belkin also includes a small rubber puck to hold the stylus when not in use.

The stand is nice and sturdy, with the non-slip rubber accents helping to keep both your tablet and the stand in place. The stylus, while comfortably balanced, requires considerable pressure to register touches. Slow or light touches often didn't register in my tests, but once I got accustomed to the amount of pressure required, this became less of an issue. The capacitive tip is also magnetized, meaning you'll be able to wake the iPad 2 ?or New iPad ?from sleep by simply gliding the stylus along the bezel. Both the stand and stylus are washable, which is perfect for sloppy chefs like me. The two parts keep your tablet safe when cooking by raising it off of food covered countertops and making sure you never have to touch the screen with food covered fingers.

It might not be the best stand or stylus, but for only $40 the Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus is a pretty good deal. Both parts are well made and do exactly what they set out to do?make it easy and safe to use your iPad or other tablet in your kitchen. I would have liked to see a companion app, but given the abundance of capable cooking apps out there, it's not really an issue. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen and your iPad is your primary recipe book, then this is definitely one accessory worth checking out.?

Make Your Own Candy Corn

Make Your Own Candy CornTrick-or-treaters who visit Alton Browns house on Halloween are rewarded with homemade treats. The best of them, according to Food Network, is his candy corn. And now you can make it too with just a few ingredients.

Even if you hate candy corn, you might like it homemade.

You'll need confectioners' sugar and granulated sugar, nonfat dry milk, kosher salt, light corn syrup, butter, vanilla extract, and gel paste food coloring. (In typical Alton Brown fashion, he tested every conceivable food coloring before deciding on the gel paste.)

Your house just might become trick-or-treaters' favorite stop this Halloween. Here's the recipe:

Why Lebanon isn't headed for civil war

Five days after a devastating bomb attack killed a top Lebanese security chief sparking minor clashes and road blockages by his supporters, a semblance of calm has returned to a country that has little interest in starting a new civil war.

The death of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the police's intelligence bureau, in a car bomb explosion in Beirut provoked headlines around the world that Lebanon was descending toward renewed civil strife and suffering the consequences of a spillover from neighboring Syria, which is caught in its own devastating conflict. Although Syria has been blamed by many Lebanese for Hassan's assassination, the reality is more complex, and the prognosis not necessarily as dire as the international assumptions would suggest.

?No I don?t think there will be a civil war from this assassination,? says Paul Salem, director of the Carnegie Endowment?s Middle East Center in Beirut. ?The leaderships of March 14 and March 8 do not want instability in Lebanon at this time,? he added referring to the two rival parliamentary coalitions that dominate the Lebanese political landscape.

Sunni and Shiite Islam: Do you know the difference? Take our quiz.

Still, Lebanon does face a period of uncertainty as Syria collapses into ever-worsening violence. Lebanon?s communal stresses and strains and the conflict in Syria almost guarantee further acts of violence ? assassinations, random bomb attacks, Shiite-Sunni violence, or possible clashes along the sensitive northern and eastern borders with Syria. But there are compelling reasons why Lebanon will not succumb to the kind of full-blown civil war that ravaged the country between 1975 and 1990.

First, memories of that debilitating 16-year conflict are still raw. The war left more than 100,000 people dead and some 17,000 still missing, a substantial number for a country with a population today of only 4 million. No one seeks a return to that grim and bloody period.

Second, in 1975, the military balance between the rival sides was more equally matched than is the case today. In 2012, there is only one major non-state armed force ? the militant Shiite Hezbollah. With its enormous military resources, Hezbollah could defeat the Lebanese Army, let alone another militia.

The confrontational dynamic in Lebanon today is no longer Christian against Muslim, but Sunni against Shiite, reflecting the intra-Muslim schism that has taken hold in the region during the past decade. Several hundred Lebanese Sunni volunteers have joined the ranks of the rebel Free Syrian Army to fight the forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Radical voices drawn mainly from the clergy are emerging in Lebanon in reaction to the Syria conflict as well as Sunni frustration at the rising power of Lebanese Shiites and a moderate Sunni leadership that seems out of step with the mood on the street.

Hezbollah cadres say they are bracing for what they believe is an inevitable large-scale car-bomb attack ? of the kind that has blighted Iraq and more recently Syria ? targeting the party?s stronghold in the densely populated southern suburbs of Beirut. Yet, in general, Lebanese Sunnis are unable to mount a prolonged internal conflict, especially against Hezbollah, even if the leadership of the community wanted to do so.

Third, despite the factional rivalries in Lebanon, the top leaders agree on the importance of maintaining stability in Lebanon and not allowing Syria?s woes to trigger domestic violence. Hezbollah stayed out of the sporadic clashes that followed Hassan?s death last week, recognizing that the Sunni supporters of the slain security chief were venting anger rather than seeking a war. The Lebanese Army also had political cover to move into trouble spots in Beirut and elsewhere to stamp out the clashes.

As the tensions on the streets dissipate, the rival factions are pursuing their disagreements on a political level. The Western-backed March 14 coalition is seeking the resignation of the government and its replacement with a neutral cabinet of technocrats drawn from neither camp. The March 8 coalition, which is headed by Hezbollah and forms the backbone of the government, refuses to step down but has said it is open to a possible cabinet reshuffle.

The Lebanese have long endured factional violence and have developed a battle-worn resilience that helps maintain a (somewhat dysfunctional) degree of stability.

?Top-level assassinations and instant street clashes that would shatter most other countries are taken in stride by most Lebanese, who stay home for 36 hours and then resume their normal lives,? wrote Rami Khouri, director of the Issam Fares Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut, in a weekly column for Agence Global.

Will Ohio State?s Football Team Decide Who Wins the White House?

Braxton Miller If you're an Ohio Republican, should you root against the Buckeyes between now and the election?

?The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.??Winston Churchill?

The 2012 presidential election looks like it could be a close one, whether in the Electoral College or the popular vote. When an election is tight, trying to understand voter behavior is all the more important.

What exactly is it that makes voters reward a challenger or punish an incumbent?? Do they care about the unemployment rate, GDP, or inflation, or is it how those variables are moving? Are voters motivated by position papers or a candidate?s personal history? ?Is the electorate responding to slick TV ads or how the candidates performed in the debates?

It may be something else altogether. Recent research has revealed that voter irrationality may be more arbitrary than we think. And in a razor-thin election just enough irrationality can make all the difference. Just how irrational are voters? It is statistically possible that the outcome of a handful of college football games in the right battleground states could determine the race for the White House.

Economists Andrew Healy, Neil Malhotra, and Cecilia Mo make this argument in a fascinating article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. They examined whether the outcomes of college football games on the eve of elections for presidents, senators, and governors affected the choices voters made. They found that a win by the local team, in the week before an election, raises the vote going to the incumbent by around 1.5 percentage points. When it comes to the 20 highest attendance teams?big athletic programs like the University of Michigan, Oklahoma, and Southern Cal?a victory on the eve of an election pushes the vote for the incumbent up by 3 percentage points. That?s a lot of votes, certainly more than the margin of victory in a tight race. And these results aren?t based on just a handful of games or political seasons; the data were taken from 62 big-time college teams from 1964 to 2008.

The good news, we suppose, is that sports really can cheer us up and make the world seem like a brighter place. The sports fan is left happier and more satisfied all around, not just on the gridiron. When you are feeling upbeat and happy, you feel more satisfied with the status quo in general. And feeling satisfied with the status quo makes you more likely to vote for the incumbent politician, even if that?s totally irrational.

The study?s authors control for economic, demographic, and political factors, so the results are much more sophisticated than just a raw correlation. They also did a deeper analysis that took into account people?s expectations. It turns out that surprise wins are especially potent, raising local support for incumbent politicians by around 2.5 percentage points.

This phenomenon isn?t limited to football. The authors also considered the 2009 NCAA Basketball Tournament and found broadly similar results. Another study looks at mayoral elections from 1948 to 2009 and analyzed those electoral contests against professional baseball, football, and basketball games. Again, if the local sports team is having a good year, it?s a good bet that incumbents will see a bump on Election Day.

No one is suggesting that college football or basketball games are the main determinants of elections. The Oklahoma University Sooners can go on a 100 game win streak and President Obama still won?t carry Oklahoma. UCLA can lose big and Mitt Romney still wouldn?t have a shot in California. Obviously, other factors besides the scores on ESPN SportsCenter matter a lot.

But these results are still amazing. Because, as the authors point out, the government has nothing to do with the game, yet incumbent politicians are getting credit or blame for the game?s outcome in the voting booth. It?s a sign of just how fickle we are and how much we can be a captive to our own moods. It?s a little scary to think that popular culture, including sports, ?medicates? us for when we face real world decisions. Furthermore, if a sports score can matter this much, we should wonder whether voters are processing the more traditional forms of political information?such as data on economic performance?in a rational manner either.

So let?s consider an extreme scenario. Right now President Obama seems to have a slight edge over Gov. Mitt Romney, but most observers expect this election to be close. For Republicans, the key to victory could come down to how they perform in three swing states: Florida, Ohio, and Virginia.

On Oct. 27th, a little more than a week before the election, the Ohio State Buckeyes have a big football game against Penn State. The University of Florida Gators have a huge match up against the University of Georgia Bulldogs. If the election remains razor close, these games in these two key battleground states could affect who sits in the White House for the next four years. Can you imagine Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer getting a late night call from the Obama campaign suggesting a particular blitz package? Or maybe Romney has some advice for how the Gators can bottle up Georgia?s running game. The decision of whether to punt or go for it on that crucial fourth down could affect the job prospects of more than just the football team?s coaching staff.

The success of your local team is the electoral cousin of beer goggles: It can cloud your judgment and make you hate yourself in the morning. And that, as they say, just ain?t right.

Blue Velvet Lingerie, Intimates History, and Suitable Styles

It has been said that in order to understand how things came to be, one should look at its origins. That is why this post will try to focus on the evolution of lingerie as well as tackle the different styles that suit a certain body type.

What is the history behind these intimate pieces of clothing?

Way back in the day, women used to wear corsets. You know-those uncomfortable garments that you cannot put on by yourself because you need to bother someone to stitch you up. And by the way, they are making a comeback as a fashion statement thanks to films such as "Moulin Rouge" and "Burlesque."

But, back to the topic. So, in the 19th century, someone by the name of Lady Duff-Gordon decided to liberate ladies from this clothing prison by promoting the use of alluring pieces. The brassiere-which was patented by Mary Phelps Jacob-soon followed.

During the First World War, women assumed a lot of roles meant for men. Thus, there was a demand for more comfortable undergarments. This eventually progressed to the state it is in today: something that covers up essential body parts while still being fashionable.

And this leads us to various styles that suit different body types...

Now that these pieces are considered as fashion items, you should not just pick one because it is the trend. You also need to consider how well it suits your form.

But, how exactly do you do that?

The only thing that you need to look at for this is your assets. By knowing what these are, you can select a piece that complements your form. And who knows? You might just be able to fit in that Blue Velvet Lingerie that you have been longing for.

So, are you ...

Gifted in the chest area?

Women who possess large busts need to have all the support they need. And luckily, they can get that through a bra with breast cups that are pre-moulded from poly foam to secure everything in place.

Pear-shaped?
A chiffon gown or a chemise with a skirt that flows would suit you best if you have a curvier bottom and smaller torso.

Curvaceous?
Ladies who are blessed with curves should avoid shockingly bright colours and loud patterns to really accentuate their shape. Instead, they should opt for something with a scooped neck or an Empire nightgown made of chiffon or nylon tulle.

Boyish?
If you were not gifted with a womanly figure, then you can make up for it by using bright shades or baby doll nighties with ruffles and lace.

How about you, is there a style you want to share?

A close contest expected in Sis Live A1 525

A thrilling contest is on the cards in the Sis Live A1 525 at Shelbourne Park in Ireland on Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Most of the runners have been struggling for consistency, thus it will be hard to predict the winner accurately.

The 525 yard event is scheduled to start at 22:20 GMT and the spectators will be looking forward to some absorbing action. The winner of the Grade A1 race will walk away with a cash prize of ?400 in the end.

Some quality greyhounds have been attracted towards the race and they will be looking forward to a strong run in the end. One of them is Night Time Hawk, who has been rated pretty highly by the bookies. She has been representing her team at the highest level of the sport, thus things will be a touch easier for her in this class.

Despite that, she will be low on confidence, as she has struggled make a strong impression in recent races at Shelbourne Park. She does not have a lot of good memories from this track, but will be looking to change that today.

The Callery?s trained bitch debuted in June 2011 and has gained a lot of experience since then. She started off her career with a few decent performances at different levels and kept on making her team proud with the passage of time.

Her performances at the lower level were really impressive and it was clear that she was ready to take on some of the best in the business in OR events. However, she had to fight extremely hard in order to shine in this class, as the level of competition was quite high.

Despite that, the black bitch did not panic and continued the hard work in order to make her team proud. She raced mostly at Harold?s Cross and the venue proved to be a very good one for her during this time period.

However, Night Time Hawk has never enjoyed racing outside that venue and it will be a big challenge for her to be competitive at Shelbourne Park. She will enter the event from trap number two and will look to blaze away to a victory in order to prove her critics wrong.

Legal Immigration: California Newspaper Considers Additional ...

Following is a typical article from Silicon Valley?s newspaper, the San Jose Mercury-News, debating over which way of screwing America is better?by increasing diversity with incompatible cultures or by adding more skilled foreigners to the workplace in a time of terrible unemployment. The piece is more of the same old liberal/business propaganda we have seen for years. But it does have a nice graph illustrating how wrong-headed Washington?s system of legal immigration has become:

image

As the chart shows, the biggest number of newbies is kinfolk-based, so cultures with big families, e.g. Hispanics, are gaining in the ethnic proportion of who lives in the United States. Immigration plus lots of babies means rapid population growth.

In regard to employment-based immigration, tech-hiring expert Norm Matloff has written many times that the H-1b program is displacing capable Americans from jobs. In addition, California is still in double-digit unemployment, 10.2 percent for September, so the local angle is not exactly upbeat.

The diversity input machine (aka the federal government) continues unabated despite the inherent danger. In 2007, the GAO published a report (Fraud Risks Complicate State?s Ability to Manage Diversity Visa) which toted up the number of immigrants admitted under the program at nearly 10,000 persons from terror-supporting nations. See also my analysis of 2010 Diversity Visa admits from Special Interest Countries whose citizens get higher scrutiny regarding national security threats: Welcome, Unfriendly Foreigners!.

The Diversity Visa lottery should have ended immediately after 9/11. But if not, then the nations eligible should have been limited to those whose citizens are unlikely to present a national security threat, but that prudent step has not been taken either.

And take a look at the list of nations contributing diversity for 2011?how do Americans benefit from having additional thousands of Bangladeshis, Egyptians and Iranians?

A Bangladeshi man was arrested last week for plotting to bomb the Federal Reserve Bank. Plus, Egypt has recently elected a jihad-friendly Muslim Brotherhood government, and Iran is still run by Khomeini?s acolytes, now building nukes in order to become the top turbans in the region.

Why is Washington still so dim on the idea that the world is full of people who hate America and are therefore unsuitable as new immigrants?

Here?s an idea: why not chuck the Diversity Visa entirely and instead admit the same number (50,000) of Christians and Jews now residing in increasingly unfriendly Muslim nations, particularly Egypt and Pakistan, where non-Muslims are killed with impunity all the time.

Back to the current scribblings, even Vivek Wadhwa, one of the ethnic boosters quoted, noted, ?I don?t think anyone would say that America lacks diversity.?

Really? So Washington can quit diversity-based immigration then. Good.

U.S. immigration choice: Education vs. diversity, or both?, By Matt O?Brien, San Jose Mercury News, October, 19, 2012

People around the world with accredited degrees in science and math should ?get a green card stapled to their diploma,? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said in his Tuesday night debate with President Barack Obama, who has made similar appeals to retain skilled foreign students.

Stewed over by lawmakers since 2009, the visa-stapled degree is a bipartisan idea that Congress has been unable to achieve. Election-year politicking brought a rare opening but then quickly shut the door to compromise this fall ? specifically, whether to create more opportunities for highly educated scientists and engineers to stay in the United States at the expense of shutting down a random lottery of visas.

?Do we want to have 6,000 Iranians coming here or do we want 6,000 scientists and researchers?? U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Coronado, asked on the House of Representatives floor. ?Do we want over 2,000 Moroccans (or) individuals who have proved they have an asset??

In other words, congressional Republicans said, the United States can award special green cards for permanent residency to foreign scientists and engineers or it can give out the visas in a random global lottery, but it cannot do both.

They sought to replace the ?diversity visa lottery? with 55,000 visas annually granting permanent residency to immigrants with advanced U.S. degrees in science, technology, engineering or math, called the STEM fields. Most Democrats reject that choice, arguing that America has room for both visa programs. Neither Romney nor Obama has weighed in on the lottery side of the debate.

The House debate collapsed in late September in a hail of carefully calibrated finger-pointing but left open an important question: Should the country retain the most highly educated migrants by sacrificing a lottery that over the past 17 years has opened the door to thousands of people? Or do both?

Everyone expects the issue to return once the political season cools off.

?We should keep the great students already studying at Stanford and Berkeley and not worry about bringing in people who may or may not contribute to U.S. competitiveness,? said author Vivek Wadhwa, who has warned of a Silicon Valley ?immigrant exodus? of talented entrepreneurs.

Attaching visas to doctorates and master?s degrees has bipartisan appeal and a strong constituency in Silicon Valley, but the diversity lottery has its defenders: people like Michael Shklovsky, whose Israeli florist parents got a break with the visa lottery that changed their family?s trajectory.

?They weren?t major professors or highly accomplished scientists,? said Shklovsky, 33, a civil trial attorney who lives in El Cerrito. ?There was really no way for us to come in other than through a lottery.?

The diversity allocation was originally designed to help Europeans choked off in the 1980s by immigration policy favoring immediate kin of people already here. Today, nearly half who win the visas are from Africa. Defenders say the lottery is still the only legal immigration chance for the kind of plucky workers who historically defined American immigration.

Shklovsky was 16 when his parents won the visa, sold their Tel Aviv flower shop and moved the family to Contra Costa County in the mid-1990s. His father recently retired as a Martinez mechanic, his mother is a Montessori school head teacher and his brother is an assistant bank manager. ?I?m really happy I?m here. I?m happy we left,? he said.

About 50,000 people win the lottery each year, a small slice of the approximately 1 million who come in, mostly through family ties or work sponsorships.

Lottery eligibility requires little more than a high school degree, and only those from countries with low rates of U.S. immigration can apply.

On the other side of the debate is Marcos Hung, 24, born in Argentina to Taiwanese immigrants and now working at Stanford Hospital on a soon-to-expire student visa. He applied for a diversity visa, but lost out ? the chances of winning are about 1 in a 100.

?That?s why they call it a lottery,? said Hung, a bioengineer who already has his name on two patents.

His chances of winning a so-called STEM visa would be closer to 100 percent ? he has a master?s in bioengineering from Rice University in Texas. Without it, he will likely go the more traditional Silicon Valley route ? hoping an employer will sponsor him for a temporary H-1B visa, and eventually being sponsored for permanent residency ? which can take many years and cost a small fortune in legal fees.
Republican and Democratic legislators say they want to make it easier for people like Hung to get green cards, but they disagree on how to do it.

A longtime diversity visa opponent, House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, sought to add the doctorate visas by killing the lottery. U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose, the minority leader of the immigration subcommittee, wanted to add the STEM visas and keep the lottery.

On the House floor, Lofgren described the Smith version as a ?sinister? ruse to cut immigration while showing a pro-immigration GOP face before the presidential election.

Even some immigrant advocates who once endorsed the lottery argue that it has done its work by welcoming more than 800,000 people since 1995.

Thirty Democrats joined Republicans voting for Smith?s version, including Bay Area Reps. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, and Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton.

Garamendi said in an interview that he prefers to keep diversity visas ? ?it?s a value statement about who we are as Americans,? he said ? but felt a need to compromise.

However, he said the Republicans set up the vote to fail by requiring two-thirds support instead of a simple majority. The tally fell 20 votes short, 257 to 158.

?That?s the game,? Garamendi said. ?It?s sad, but that?s what most of this year?s votes were about.?

Other advocates for high-skill immigration say more Democrats should reconsider the ?all-or-nothing? approach.

?Having diversity is important,? Wadhwa said, ?but I don?t think anyone would say that America lacks diversity.?

5 Reasons Baby Boomers Need to Pay Attention to Estate Plans ...

The first day(and night) of rain. It was so wonderful to wake up to a drizzly, cool morning. We spent all weekend laying sod and landscaping our pool area. This one barren spot repeatedly grows weeds which we?ve dutifully eradicated every year for 7 years now. Don?t ask me why we waited so long. Dave tells me it?s because now our boys are old enough to help. And that they did. Both Cameron & Daniel worked really hard. We could not have done it without them.

I?m a boomer. Are you? I?m actually the last year of the baby boomers. Below is a hit list of situations that likely apply

to you or soon will. It?s great be in a position to making monetary gifts. This is a smart strategy to reduce your estate AND as an added bonus, you get to witness firsthand how your generosity helps others. If you have a plan, you should review it regularly to make sure it?s up to date and if you don?t, we?ve outlined just a few of the reasons why you should.

Have a great week!

Christine

?

Baby Boomers ? the biggest generation now on the verge of being the biggest group of inheritance recipients ? must answer the call to make prudent decisions on a staggering amount of inherited wealth.? Boomers who have not yet made an estate plan will have an added impetus for doing so.? And Boomers who have an estate plan that may be several years old need to review that plan to ensure it aligns with changes in their lives.

Here are five reasons why Boomers need to make and review estate plans now:

Changing relationships.? Your beneficiary list needs to be reviewed in light of your current status and any changes in family structure or relationships.

Adult children.? The minor children you may have provided for in an earlier estate plan have now grown and flown the nest ? do they still need the protections you had in place for them?? Have they matured into financially responsible adults, or do you need to add new protections in a trust for them?

Your health.? As you age, you learn a lot more about your own health.? Do you have a health care directive in place to protect yourself in case of incapacity?? Are you going to live longer than you thought you would when you drafted your first estate plan?

Your property.? Any sales, loss or acquisition of property needs to be properly accounted for in your estate plan.? As we age, we tend to accumulate more.? What plans do you have for it?

Your legacy.? It may now be financially feasible ? and wise ? to give while you are still living.

Beyond Their 10 Blue Links, Google?s And Bing?s Search Strategies Diverge

bing_blueNot too long ago, Google and Bing seemed fully focused on adding as many social features to their search engines as possible. For Google, that meant adding lots of Google+ features and for Bing it meant making the best out of its exclusive relationship with Facebook. Since then, though, it seems the two search engines' strategies have changed, with Google slowly deemphasizing social search and Bing going all in by adding more social features than ever.

Bill Gates already has a Surface and you don't video

Being the founder of Microsoft certainly has its advantages, as well as its downsides. Case in point: the video interview Microsoft released this morning, starring none other than Bill Gates himself talking about the world of Windows 8. On the positive side, Gates reveals he's already got his own soon-to-be-released Microsoft Surface RT -- he calls it "an unbelievably great product," unsurprisingly -- with a black keyboard. On the less than positive side, despite being out of the CEO seat at the company, Gates still has to do interviews like the one found after the break. You'd think he could just get Ballmer to put on his old Crazy Eddie's impersonation! We've dropped that notorious video after the break as well, for comparison sake.

Home Improvement Ideas: Recreational Room - redlighteagle

Doing home improvement on your recreational room is the perfect answer in a slow economy. You can improve your home and have many fun things to do as a family in your home instead of leaving it and spending more money.

Home improvement ideas include having a professional install carpeting, wood floors or laminate wood floors to your recreational room. To choose which type of flooring to put in your recreational room ask yourself these questions:

If I am to put carpeting in my recreational room, will it last? Will there be a lot of children using the recreational room? If there will be a lot of children using the recreational room you may want to opt for wood flooring or laminate flooring. You want everyone to have a relaxed and fun time in the recreational room, not stressed and nervous about spilling on the carpeting.

If I buy wood flooring will my dog's nails scratch the flooring? Will there be a hot tub in my recreational room that will get water on the floor? If you have a dog or multiple dogs you may want to opt for laminate wood flooring. These days laminate wood flooring is very strong and you can even purchase laminate wood flooring with grooves between the "wood" to make it look even more natural.

If you live alone or as a couple you may choose wood flooring or carpeting in your recreational room as most adults are more careful with regards to stains and scratching the floor. Remember the choice is yours with the flooring you choose. We are giving you thought out suggestions when you choose to improve your home.

Before you hire someone to install the flooring, make sure you add a fresh coat of paint to each room you will be improving. The professional that you hire can also help you choose which type of flooring is best for your home and living situation.

If you have a large rec room with a few rooms off of it, you may choose to make the largest room your main room. Many folks like to have this room as their media center. The media center will have a large screen TV, comfortable chairs and/or couch with cup holders. You may choose to add a bar to your recreational room. You can put in a little freezer to keep the ice cold as well as beverages. If you are going to stock your bar with liquor please remember to lock it up.

You may also add a game system such as the Wii, PlayStation 3, etc. to add to more fun.

A pool table and/or air hockey table, vintage games such as Pac Man and foosball are nice additions to entertain you and your family as well.

In one of the rooms off of the recreational room, you may have the floor installer add carpeting or another type of flooring. Use this room to put all of your workout machines in. This can be your quiet workout room. You may want to add the home improvement of having built in speakers in this room so you can listen to music to get you working out even harder. Another home improvement idea is to add mirrors to this room so you can watch yourself workout and your body improve.

Taxes go up next year, no matter who's president

By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, The Associated Press

President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

    A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers may not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.

CNBC's Courtney Reagan reports House Democrat Chris Van Hollen is calling for extending the 2 percent payroll tax holiday; and NBC affiliate WOOD found workers at the Chevy Volt Battery's Grand Rapids plant of LG Chem may be getting paid to do nothing.
