Campus community asked to help conserve electricity ? Inside ...

To all Springfield faculty, staff and students ?

The campus annual electrical demand rates are set for the entire year historically over these few weeks when the students have returned for the Fall Semester and the ambient temperatures are very high. This combination causes the electrical consumption to peak and thereby determine what electrical capacity City Utilities must plan for our campus throughout the entire year. An increase from the previous year can be quite significant, potentially tens of thousands of dollars beyond what was paid the year before. It establishes the minimum we must pay through the next 10 months for the demand portion of the electric bills, regardless of the actual demand we use. With expansion of the campus, some of this is expected, but what can be avoided without impacting the mission of the University can keep our utility costs down.

Therefore, since Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4 and 5 are expected to reach the mid to high 90?s, it is most important that we do what we can to minimize our electrical peak for those days.

Please turn off electrical equipment and appliances that are not in use, when leaving your office turn off lights and computers if you are not returning for some time, and turn up the thermostats in those spaces where they are accessible.

The campus community stepped up to make a difference last year, please help us do it again.

Thank you for your cooperation.
