Boise will be named a top retirement destination by Where to Retire magazine, which focuses on retirement relocation decisions. It will be profiled as one of 15 low-cost cities and towns in the magazine's September/October issue.
Boise was among the destinations with "below-average living costs, affordable homes and low taxes" and "a wealth of outdoor adventures, a rich history to explore, modern-day cultural events and educational amenities," according to a press release. The magazine specifically highlighted the Boise area's mountain and desert retreats.
Retirees who move to a destination may help boost that local economy. States and localities around the country have tried to attract retirees, sometimes even crafting plans to encourage retirees to move there. The magazine estimates 700,000 Americans move to new places to retire, and that retirees who move are healthier, more educated and wealthier than those who don't move to a new place.
Other cities and towns featured in the issue include Spokane; St. George, Utah; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Green Valley, Ariz.; and several southern-U.S. cities.
