Logitech G600 MMO Gaming Mouse

Pardon the obvious pun, but MMO mice are a different breed of mice altogether. Unlike gaming mice designed with, say, first person shooters in mind, they are typically equipped with many more buttons so gamers can execute a swath of commands in various settings with just one hand. This accordingly frees the other hand to remain glued on the A, W, and D keys. The Logitech G600 MMO Gaming Mouse ($79.99 direct) fits nicely in this mold, and though not as customizable as some of its peers, it's a well-designed and reasonably priced gaming mouse for hardcore and casual MMO players alike.

Design
The G600 doesn't sport a flashy, in-your-face design like that of the Robocop-esque Mad Catz Cyborg MMO 7 Gaming Mouse . Instead, it sports a subdued minimalist aesthetic, ultimately looking very much like an ordinary mouse that happens to be stuffed with programmable buttons. Gamers looking for a mouse with a more textured finish for a better grip would be better off with the Editors' Choice Gigabyte M8000Xtreme , which is outfitted with a soft rubber exterior. On the plus side, though, the plastic material used for the G600's body was surprisingly resistant to sweat-induced splotches, even after prolonged periods of use. Also, while adjustable weight isn't as consequential with MMO mice as it is with those geared toward first-person shooters, it's nonetheless worth noting that the G600's 0.31-pound weight cannot be calibrated specifically to the user's preference with weight cartridges.

Since MMO mice cram so many buttons onto a limited surface area, the button arrangment is paramount and can singlehandedly make the difference between a great and mediocre mouse. This was the case with the Razer Naga Hex , whose awkward hexagonal button placement marred what was an otherwise terrific mouse. The G600 handily sidesteps this pitfall with a judiciously designed button arrangement. Its three primary buttons are standard left- and right- click, with a "G-shift" button in the middle that functionally doubles the number of commands that can be assigned to the twelve programmable buttons located in a thumb panel on the left side of the chassis. Back on top, the rubberized scroll wheel is fairly modest, and nowhere as pronounced as that of the Corsair Vengeance M60's hulking metallic wheel. G7 and G8 buttons are located beneath the scroll wheel, and the latter allows gamers to cycle through three different profiles in the G600's built-in memory: Primary MMO, Alternative MMO, and Generic gaming. These profiles can be modified with the G600's downloadable software. In addition to creating custom profiles, the downloadable software also allows users to select different color combinations that can illuminate the thumb panel's twelve backlit buttons.

Unlike the Star Wars: The Old Republic Gaming Mouse by Razer , which can work as both a wired and wireless mouse, the G600 is a strictly wired affair that connects via braided, tangle-free USB 2.0 cable. Despite the extra clutter on your desk that inevitably comes with wires, it's generally accepted that wired mice offer a greater degree of precision that as of yet cannot be guaranteed by their wireless counterparts, a seemingly minor attribute that can make all the difference on the gaming grid.

Performance
In and out of gaming, the G600 felt comfortable in my palm, which isn't always a given with mice crammed with an unwieldy amount of buttons. During a brief run in World of Warcraft, I quickly grew accustomed to the twelve-button arrangement in the thumb panel and was able to easily access the appropriate buttons whenever I needed to utilize a particular skill that I had mapped out. This is due in large part to the layout of the buttons, as they are divided into two sets comprised of six buttons each, making differentiating between the keys a seamless endeavor. Moreover, the G-shift button's convenient placement between the left- and right- click buttons effectively doubled the functionality of the thumb panel's buttons which, in conjunction with the G8 button's ability to switch between gaming profiles on the fly, ultimately made for a satisfyingly customizable experience. And while the G600 falls short of the insane customizability seen in the Cyborg R.A.T. 9 Gaming Mouse , it's forgivable given the fact that the latter costs nearly twice as much as the G600. And while DPI adjustability isn't as important with MMO's as it is with first person shooters, it's still worth noting the G600's lack of a dedicated DPI-switching button. Consequently, the DPI can be adjusted only by toggling between different profiles with pre-set DPI's ranging from 200 to 8,200 that must be programmed in advance through the G600's downloadable software. Since the task can't be done purely through hardware, just be sure to plan in advance before jumping headfirst into a quest.

The Logitech G600 MMO Gaming Mouse is a well-designed mouse for hardcore and casual MMO enthusiasts alike. While it may not be as customizable as some of its peers, it makes up for this shortcoming with a reasonable price tag. For gamers on a budget or for those who simply aren't concerned having their mice tailored to exact specifications, it's a good choice. Otherwise, the Gigabyte M8000Xtreme hits all the marks and remains the mouse to beat.

ALLEN, Texas (AP) ? Call it the palace of high school football: A gleaming $60 million facility with seats for 18,000 roaring fans, a 38-foot-wide high-definition video screen, corporate sponsors and a towering upper deck.

Welcome to the new home of Eagles Football.

As school districts across the country struggle to retain teachers, replace outdated textbooks and keep class sizes from ballooning, the wealthy, burgeoning Dallas suburb of Allen is preparing to christen its new stadium with a sold-out Friday night matchup against defending state champions Southlake Carroll.

It's not the biggest high school stadium in football-mad Texas, but Eagle Stadium is the grandest, with a spacious weight room for the players and practice areas for Allen High School's wrestling and golf teams. The school district decided to build it in a down economy, knowing full well it will never recoup the costs.

It's a decision that local officials and team supporters defend, saying the stadium will serve as a community centerpiece and source of pride for years to come and will more than pay the costs of operating it.

"There will be kids that come through here that will be able to play on a field that only a few people will ever get the chance to play in," said Wes Bishop, the father of a junior linebacker on the team and head of the local booster club.

For longtime Allen fans, it's a giant step forward from a facility that district spokesman Tim Carroll called "inadequate in almost every way."

The old building opened in 1976, when Allen had fewer than 8,000 residents, with 7,000 permanent seats, one concession stand and one set of bathrooms. As the town grew to its current population of 87,000, the school had to add portable toilets and rent temporary bleachers, which added 7,000 seats at a cost of $250,000 a year, Carroll said.

Today, the high school has 4,000 students enrolled and a 700-member band that's among the biggest in the country. Collin County, which includes Allen and other Dallas suburbs, is one of the wealthiest areas of Texas ? and home to some of the state's top football teams.

About 63 percent of voters supported a $119 million bond package in 2009. Construction on the stadium began a year later. District officials went with more expensive concrete seating over all-aluminum benches, adding perhaps $4 million more to the cost, according to officials. But they said they expected this stadium to last decades.

"Our intention is not to recoup the money it cost to build the stadium," Carroll said. "It's not practical to say we'll get that money back. (But) the revenue we receive from the stadium will far exceed the cost of operating it."

While the district did not have estimates, Carroll said he expects the stadium to be competitive in hosting high school playoff games and other events. The school has also sold six sponsorships for about $35,000 a year, he said.

The new stadium revives an old argument in Texas about whether communities and their schools have their priorities straight.

In 1982, when the West Texas city of Odessa built a 19,000-seat stadium for a then-unheard-of $5.6 million, it drew scorn from some people who questioned the district's priorities. Odessa would be featured a few years later in the book "Friday Night Lights," a national best-seller that inspired a movie and a TV series.

Ross Perot, the billionaire businessman and former presidential candidate, repeatedly took aim at his home state's football culture as he pushed the state to shed extracurricular activities and increase accountability measures.

"Do we want our kids to win on Friday night on the football field or do we want them to win all through their lives?" Perot said in a 1988 Washington Post column. "That's what we have to start asking ourselves."

Today, neighboring Plano High School's stadium seats more than 14,000 people. Mesquite, about 30 miles away from Allen, has a 20,000-seat stadium. And the Berry Center, a suburban Houston facility with a stadium, an arena and theater, opened in 2006 and cost about $84 million.

"In a couple of years, someone's going to do something that's bigger and bigger," said Robert McSpadden, who runs the high school football site TexasBob.com.

Officials in Allen reject the premise that they're focusing on sports over academics. The bonds approved three years ago also funded a new performing arts center, and Carroll said extra revenue from stadium operations will go into the district general fund. Allen's student test scores are also largely stellar.

But for now, Eagle Stadium is gaining wide notoriety. The No. 8-ranked Eagles' Friday game against Southlake Carroll, which won a state championship last year and is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press' Class 5A preseason poll this season, sold out in just over a day. More than 2,000 people are expected to watch from standing-room areas.

Bishop's son Zack, a linebacker, said he and his teammates already noticed differences: a more spacious weight room, a softer playing field.

"It's going to be really incredible to step out in front of a full house and a sold-out game," he said.

Chris Wallace, whose oldest son is a senior quarterback, said she had to reassure him when they visited smaller colleges over the summer with older facilities.

"In his mind, this is it," she said. "He can't even believe it's here already."

And there's always room for growth.

Fred Montes, one of the architects of what he called "an incredible project," said the district's master plan left open the possibility for more construction, if needed.

"The end zone that has seats currently can be expanded," he said. "And on the visitors' side, you can always put a deck."

Distressed conversations about the party?s inability to win over Latino voters have been a constant, so far, at the convention. Everywhere, that is, except at the podium at the center of the Tampa Bay Times forum.

And the topic of immigration, an emotional issue that resonates deeply for Latinos, has been mentioned from the convention?s dais only twice: Once by South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who has enacted tough immigration measures in her state, and once by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Latino voters played an important role in fueling President Obama?s victory over Sen. John McCain in 2008, when Mr. Obama claimed

67 percent of the Latino vote to Senator McCain?s 31 percent.?Since that time, the Latino share of the national vote has grown by 25 percent, to 8.7 percent of the popular vote.

The most recent Wall Street Journal/NBC/Telemundo poll, however, puts Romney at just 23 percent support among Latinos.

?Where [Romney?s] numbers are right now," said GOP strategist Ana Navarro, "he should be pressing the panic button."

The question for Romney is simple, said Ms. Navarro: ?If he doesn?t beat McCain?s numbers, he doesn?t win.?

And that?s only this election cycle. Longer-term, to describe the party?s political challenges as ?daunting? is understating the problem many-fold.

Every month for the next 20 years, 50,000 Latino voters will turn 18 ? the equivalent of adding the entire state of Vermont to voter rolls each year. Hispanics already make up 40 percent of the population of Texas, and are pushing 30 percent in Nevada and north of 20 percent in Colorado.

Without Hispanic support, ?Texas is one bad political environment away from being a presidential swing state,? says Chris Jankowski, the president of the Republican State Leadership Committee that will put some $3 million behind more than 100 Latino candidates for state legislatures during the 2012 election cycle.

A growing consensus

Party leaders from President George W. Bush?s political mastermind Karl Rove and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour to former Republican National Committee chairman and current senior Romney adviser Ed Gillespie all agree: The party cannot go on without making serious inroads into the Latino community.

?The Republican Party can?t do with a dynamic, growing part of the electorate like it?s done with the African-American vote, where it found itself in a place where we get five percent we consider ourselves fortunate, 10 percent we?re thrilled, 13 or 14 percent and we?re ecstatic,? Mr. Rove said.

Romney needs to dig deep into Hispanic advertising and television markets, Navarro advises, in order to begin clawing his way back.

There are signs that the Romney campaign is taking the task seriously: It unveiled two Spanish language ads during the convention, gave prime speaking roles to a trio of Hispanic Republican governors and Senator Rubio, and even Romney?s Spanish-speaking son, Craig, gave an address on the convention?s final night.

Yet some observers say they would be surprised to see Romney wade deeply into immigration specifically.

Romney said she was "excited" about the space and laughed about how nitpicky her husband and his campaign aides were being about details like what she'll wear Tuesday?adding that the "verdict is still out" on her clothing choice.

"The funniest thing of all is that Stuart Stevens who wears his shirts inside out is advising me on what dress I should wear tonight. So I know I've really come full circle now," Romney said of her husband's senior strategist. "Frankly, I didn't realize that Stuart had to weigh in on this--or my husband. It was going to be like my wedding night; I wasn't going to let him know what I was going to wear. But now they have opinions."

Mitt Romney Makes Obama Birth Certificate Joke

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made a joke about his birth certificate - and took a subtle shot at his opponent in doing so - at a rally Friday.

Speaking about his roots in Michigan, where has father was governor, he told a Commerce, Mich., crowd, "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate."

"They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

It was awkward, if nothing else, for Romney to joke about "birther" conspiracies that dogged President Barack Obama since his 2008 White House run.

The President released his long form birth certificate in 2011.

The Obama campaign quickly responded, saying that with the comment, Romney was embracing the extreme elements in the conservative movement.

A spokesman for Romney said he was "only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised."

Romney's son Matt joked earlier this year about Obama's birth certificate, referring to Mitt Romney's tax returns - his own "missing" document controversy:

"I heard that someone suggest that as soon as President Obama releases his grades, and birth certificate, and a long list of things, then maybe he will."

Romney believes Obama was born in the U.S., saying in 2011 that "the man needs to be taken out of office but his citizenship isn't the reason why."
