Calgary bookstores continue to help flood victims

The Calgary bookstore Pages on Kensington is helping customers replace books they lost, while publishers have offered discounts to the store.

The bookstore Pages on Kensington, which did not suffer damage, started an initiative in June in which it offered to sell books to customers at cost. In addition, the store made accounts for customers who lost books in the flooding to allow others to make donations. Customers were able to e-mail the store with titles they lost for Pages staff to try to locate and the store did not charging for shipping.

The store set a deadline of July 9 originally, but extended it to July 31, according to the store's Twitter account.

?I extended the deadline because after spending two weeks with the emergency clean-up of my parents? house I knew that people weren?t ready to sit down and think clearly about what they had lost, when they were still ripping out drywall,? Pages owner Simone Lee told the website Quill and Quire in mid-July.

Several publishers, including Anansi/Groundwood, Simon & Schuster, and others offered to help Pages on Kensington with the plan, selling books to the store at discounted prices. Some, like the University of Alberta Press and Coach House Books, gave the store free copies, while Penguin Random House Canada sold books at a 50 percent discount.

Other indie stores stepped forward to help bookstores affected in Calgary, including Galiano Island Books of Galiano Island and Ella Minnow Children?s Bookstore of Toronto, which split its sales for one day with damaged Calgary bookstore Owl?s Nest. Owl?s Nest later announced it would be assisting bookstore Pixie Hollow Books, where the entire inventory was wiped out. Owl's Nest donated funds received from other bookstores as well half of their own earnings for one day to Pixie Hollow.

Glide, the video messaging app that launched on the Disrupt NY stage just a few months ago, today announced that it has reached 3.5 million downloads, with users sharing upwards of 12 million seconds of video each day. For some perspective, that's about 139 days worth of video. Those users are also watching around 15 million seconds of video each day. According to the official press release, daily active users have grown by 120 percent in July.

John Wall signs contract extension with Wizards

John Wall has missed about one-quarter of the games since he was the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft. He hasn't been an All-Star. His team hasn't won more than 29 games in a regular season.

Yet his game ? and his team ? got considerably better when he returned from an injury last season, and he remains the cornerstone of the Washington Wizards, who took the calculated risk Wednesday of signing the point guard to a contract extension. Two people familiar with the deal say it's a max deal, worth about $80 million over five years.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team's announcement Wednesday did not reveal financial terms. A news conference will be held Thursday.

"He is the cornerstone of our team," Wizards owner Ted Leonsis said in the team's release announcing the extension. "And we have clearly expressed our desire to build around him."

Wall was the top overall pick in the 2010 draft after playing one season of college basketball at Kentucky, immediately becoming the prime building block for a Wizards club that now has missed the playoffs each of the past five seasons.

He has averaged 16.9 points, eight assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 35.8 minutes during his career, starting 172 of 184 games. Various injuries have caused him to miss an average of 21 games per season, and he appeared in only 42 in 2012-13 because of a stress injury in his left knee cap.

When he returned, the 22-year-old Wall averaged a career-high 18.5 points, along with 7.6 assists, four rebounds and 1.3 steals in 32.7 minutes. He really began to hit his stride late in the season, even showing some signs of developing into an outside shooter. The Wizards went 5-28 without him, 24-25 with him.

If Wall hadn't been able to reach an agreement with the Wizards this offseason, he would have become an unrestricted free agent in 2014.

With Wall and a pair of players chosen with the No. 3 overall picks in the past two drafts ? shooting guard Bradley Beal and small forward Otto Porter ? the Wizards are hoping they will be more competitive.

In the Wizards' announcement, Wall said he will do "everything I can to get this team back where it belongs."

Judge: 3 Penn State ex-officials to stand trial

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State's ex-president and two former top school administrators were ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges accusing them of a cover-up in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Prosecutors showed enough evidence during a two-day preliminary hearing to warrant a trial for ex-President Graham Spanier, former vice president Gary Schultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley, District Judge William Wenner concluded.

Wenner called it "a tragic day for Penn State University."

The men engaged in a "conspiracy of silence," the lead state prosecutor, Bruce Beemer, said during his closing argument. They covered up their failure to tell police about a 2001 allegation that Sandusky was molesting a boy in a university locker room shower, even after they were aware that police investigated complaints about Sandusky showering with boys in 1998, Beemer said.

The key testimony centered on a series of emails among the three defendants that discussed the 1998 and 2001 cases and the testimony of Mike McQueary, a former team assistant and quarterback who said he had immediately told Schultz, Curley and the late longtime football coach Joe Paterno that he had seen Sandusky molesting a boy in the shower in 2001.

Sandusky, a defensive coordinator under Paterno until his retirement in 1999, was convicted last year of 45 counts of child sexual abuse. He maintains his innocence and is appealing a 30- to 60-year state prison term.

Anthony Lubrano, a Penn State trustee who watched the two days of testimony, said he had not expected Wenner to throw out the case, given the low level of evidence necessary to send the case to trial. However, he said, "if you get an unbiased jury (at a trial), it'll be hard to get those charges to stick."

Spanier testified to a grand jury that he was unaware of the 1998 investigation while Curley and Schultz testified that McQueary reported only that Sandusky and the boy were engaged in naked, inappropriate horseplay that made him uncomfortable. Once the defendants became aware of an investigation into Sandusky in 2010 or 2011, they did nothing to stop it, obstruct it or hide evidence, their lawyers said.

"What was reported was not a report of any activity that was sexual in nature," Spanier told the grand jury in testimony read aloud in court Tuesday. "I know better than to jump to conclusions about things like that."

The three were charged with perjury, obstruction, endangering the welfare of children, failure to properly report suspected abuse and conspiracy. Those charges include allegations of hiding evidence from investigators and lying to the grand jury.

Penn State and the Paterno family declined to comment.

Curley and Schultz were initially charged in November 2011, when Sandusky was arrested, and accused of perjury and failure to properly report the incident.

Spanier was forced out as president at that time. A year later, he was charged with covering up a complaint about Sandusky while additional charges were filed against Curley and Schultz. Spanier remains a faculty member on administrative leave.

Paterno was fired and died in January 2012.
