Think of the last time you went out to eat, and be honest: Did you chow down at a favorite locally owned haunt, or opt for the familiarity of a chain restaurant?
A new report from market researchers NPD Group finds that overall, Americans are eating out less than? few years ago, as the weak economy has caused people to cut back on such splurges. Total restaurant visits have fallen every year since 2008, from 62.7 billion restaurant visits that year to 60.6 billion in 2011.
The cutbacks have hit mom-and-pop restaurants much harder than chains. The NPD Group data shows that independent restaurants now account for 27 percent of restaurant visits, down from 28 percent in 2008.
When business falls, closures are inevitable. Although the number of independent restaurants increased slightly between 2008 and 2009, many independent restaurateurs have since had to throw in the towel.
In the past two years, NPD reports that the number of independent restaurants in the U.S. has fallen by 8,652. In that same two-year period, the number of chain restaurants has increased by 1,750.

And if history repeats, probably will for a week or two once I get home. My wife's already prepared for me to eat only (and, yes, many) small portions of meat and cheese for days.
But enough about the food.
Saturday was a travel and decompression day for many of us here. Arrive in the early morning after flying through the night. Find your apartment or hotel, get settled in, and head out on the town. Eric from Phonescoop got about 30 or so of us together Saturday night. Great to see friends old and new. And, somehow, we made it home.
But enough about the drink.

FRIDAY, Feb. 24 (HealthDay News) ? Contrary to numerous reports, oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types are rarely present in mammary epithelium of patients with breast cancer, according to a study published in the March 1 issue of Cancer.
Kimberly Baltzell, Ph.D., from the University of California at San Francisco, and colleagues analyzed malignant tissue specimens from 70 breast cancer patients using in situ hybridization (ISH), with probes that were specific for the capsid region of 12 oncogenic HPV types, and in situ polymerase chain reaction (IS-PCR), with primers that were specific for the capsid region of HPV-16.
The researchers found that, using ISH, HPV was observed in four of 70 specimens (5.7 percent); using IS-PCR, HPV was observed in two of 70 specimens (2.9 percent). For negative specimens, there was high concordance between the two methods (94.3 percent for both). However, no concordance was seen between the tests for the positive specimens.
?Oncogenic (high-risk) HPV types were present in malignant breast epithelium very infrequently and, thus, may be causative agents of only a relatively small proportion of all breast cancers,? the authors write.

NASA clocks 20 million mph winds near black hole
Scientists report record-breaking winds arising from a black hole called IGR J17091-3624. The wind's speed, 20 million miles per hour, would be expected in much larger black holes.
Astronomers using NASA?s Chandra X-ray Observatory?have reported?record-breaking wind speeds coming from a stellar-mass black hole.
Skip to next paragraphThe ?wind?, a high-speed stream of material that?s being drawn off a star orbiting the black hole and ejected back out into space, has been clocked at a staggering 20 million miles per hour ? 3% the speed of light! That?s ten times faster than any such wind ever measured from a black hole of its size!
?The black hole, dubbed?IGR J17091-3624 (IGR J17091 for short), is located about 28,000 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. It is part of a binary system, with a Sun-like star in orbit around it.
?This is like the cosmic equivalent of winds from a category five hurricane,? said Ashley King from the University of Michigan, lead author of the study. ?We weren?t expecting to see such powerful winds from a black hole like this.?
IGR J17091 exhibits wind speeds akin to black holes many times its mass? such winds have only ever been measured coming from black holes millions or even billions of times more massive.
?It?s a surprise this small black hole is able to muster the wind speeds we typically only see in the giant black holes,? said co-author Jon M. Miller, also from the University of Michigan.
Stellar-mass black holes are formed from the gravitational collapse of stars about 20 to 25 times the mass of our Sun.
?This black hole is performing well above its weight class,? Miller added.
IGR J17091 is also surprising in that it seems to be expelling much more material from its accretion disk than it is capturing. Up to 95% of the disk material is being blown out into space by the high-speed wind which, unlike polar jets associated with black holes, blows in many different directions.
While jets of material have been previously observed in IGR J17091, they have not been seen at the same time as the high-speed winds. This supports the idea that winds can suppress the formation of jets.
Chandra observations made two months ago did not show evidence of the winds, meaning they can apparently turn on and off. The winds are thought to be powered by constant variations in the powerful magnetic fields surrounding the black hole.
The study was published in the Feb. 20 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

I?m planning to start a deli.Me,my wife and a part time employee will be working there. I?m not planning to put either me or my wife on payroll. So the only person on the payroll will the part time employee.
Now i?m shopping around for liability insurance. Some of the agents says I have to have worker?s compensation insurance as well. Do I really need that? I live in NJ

I am a huge fan of Fashion! Fashion is so much fun. I like to dress up and do different things with my wardrobe. I try to be different whenever I can.
Do you feel under pressure to wear the coolest clothes?
To be honest, I feel very really lucky because I don"t feel the need to be pretty for anybody else but me. I don"t wear outfits or dresses because I feel like it"s going to make the best-dressed lists in magazines; I really could care less about things like that.
What do you care about when it comes to fashion?
As long as I feel pretty and I feel confident in what I"m doing, then that"s all that matters to me. I think I got lucky because that"s what my mum taught me and that"s what I grew up thinking.
Do you enjoy getting dressed up for glamorous red carpet events?
I love glamming up for red carpets every now and then, but I can"t do it all the time. It"s nice to feel pretty and it"s nice to get dressed up, but it"s also nice to strike a balance because it"s nice to be out of the spotlight every now and then.
What do you like to wear when you relax at home?
When I"m home, I"m a jeans and T-shirt girl. I keep it simple and I don"t wear any make-up. I put my hair up and I relax. That"s bliss to me.
Do you enjoy wearing expensive designer outfits?
It"s funny because I don"t think I could wear designer outfits every day of the year. I"m much more laid back and casual with my own personal style. To be honest, a lot of the time I don"t even know what I"m wearing. People will ask me, "Who designed your dress?" But I don"t have a clue! We"ll have to check the label or ask someone in the know!
Where do you like to shop?
I don"t like to pick specific stores. I"m more about shopping at random places. I just go to places that look nice and I pick out things that I"m comfortable wearing. Comfort is key!

For me, it"s all about shoes. I love shoes!

I don"t have a favourite. I love ankle boots, flats, stilettos, heels? Everything! I probably own over 50 pairs of shoes, but I share a lot of them with my mum. We are the same shoe size, so we"re really lucky.

When it comes to shoes, I love how Christian Louboutin heels look on my feet but they can be a little painful to wear. They are beautiful and I own a lot of his shoes, but you"ll usually find me wearing boots or flats most of the time. I like to keep it casual.

I love bags, but I"m not big on jewellery. Every now and then I fall in love with random rings and bracelets, but I don"t wear jewellery all the time. I like to keep it simple.
When it comes to shopping, how do you spoil yourself?
I don"t think this is classed as shopping, but I love to really spoil myself with is a massage. Massages are really, really lovely! I don"t do big splurges on fashion because if I bought an expensive pair of glasses, I"m sure I would lose them. I"ve been given really nice things like purses and bags that are luxuries - but I prefer to treat myself to a day at the spa rather than anything else.
We"ve talked about fashion, but what about beauty? How would you describe your make-up style?
I wear a lot of make-up when I"m working because that"s part of the job. But whenever I"m not working, I don"t wear make-up at all. It"s rare to see me in make-up unless I"m going out to dinner or to an event.
Why is that?
I don"t like to wear make-up all the time because I like to let my skin breathe. It"s important to let it rest, especially if you wear make-up all day long at work.
How do you keep your skin so clean and clear?
I wash my face every morning and every night. I also try to keep it moisturised. I use a lot of Oil Of Olay products that are geared towards an older generation, but I find if you start using them now, I"m sure they will help.
Do you have any other beauty tips?
I also think it"s important to drink a lot of water. Hydration is key when you want clear skin! Oh, and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.
Do you worry about the paparazzi if you head outside without any make-up?
No, I never care about the paparazzi. I never think of them in any spectrum of my life because I don"t care what I look like. I"m happy on the inside and that"s all that matters.

My point is that when it comes to defending a child, especially one with a disability, and especially if they believe that child is somehow being wronged, these parents?will fight against all odds and all evidence they may disagree with, for what they believe their child needs.
I truly and fully understand where these parents are coming from, being the parent of?a child with special needs myself.? Too often, they do not have the right information, or do not have all the information, or have developed strong beliefs and will not listen to that which goes against their beliefs.? I respect this obstinacy.? They are doing what they believe is in the best interest of their child.? What else should a parent do?
So what should a teacher or other staff person do in these situations, especially if it is one where the parents may not, in the opinion of the staff and the face of all information and evidence available, be making a wise set of educational choices for their child?? First, you have to be honest with the parents with your beliefs and why.? That is your professional duty to the family and to the child.? But there is more that you need to do.?
Try and reconnect with the family.? Try and help them understand that you are not their enemy.? Try and help them understand you also want to help their child succeed.? Try and help them understand that while you may disagree, you still respect their support for their child, and you would hope they would respect you for giving your honest, professional assessment and recommendations on how to help their child, even if they disagree with you.? Too often the emotion of the situation for a family (and sometimes for a professional) can turn what is an honest disagreement about educational needs into a personal animosity.? If you can keep the situation as an honest disagreement ? and this is very, very hard to do with all the emotion involved in special education ? you have the opportunity, at a minimum, to keep lines of communication open.? As long as those lines of communication stay open, the possibility of eventual positive resolution, no matter how faint they may be now, still exist.? Try and do what you can.?

TAMPA, Fla. ? Steven Stamkos was happier about the win than another personal accomplishment.
Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 40th goal of the season, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Saturday night.
The 22-year old Stamkos became the first Tampa Bay player to have three consecutive seasons of at least 40 goals when he scored 1:50 into the second period. The center stole an errant pass at the Lightning blue line and made a nifty stick-handling move during a breakaway to beat goalie Tomas Vokoun and give the Lightning a 2-0 lead.
?It?s nice,? Stamkos said. ?You kind of set some personal goals before the season. To get that again in a big win at this time of year just makes it even more special.?
Tampa Bay, 11th in the Eastern Conference, is six points behind Toronto for the final playoff spot in the East. Despite trading center Dominic Moore and defenseman Pavel Kubina for draft picks and minor league left wing Jon Kalinski in a three-day span, the Lightning have won two in a row.
?The only thing that we know right now is we can?t control what goes on with management,? Stamkos said. ?They have a plan. Just because there?s been a couple trades doesn?t mean that we?re going to stop playing with that winning mentality that we all know.?
Stamkos has nine game-winning goals this season, breaking the team record he set in 2010-11.
?It shows consistency and desire, and he?s got that,? Tampa Bay right wing Martin St. Louis said of Stamkos.
Tom Pyatt also scored, and Mathieu Garon made 23 saves for the Lightning.
Brooks Laich had the lone goal for the Capitals, who snapped a three-game skid with a 2-1 road win over the Florida Panthers on Friday.
?It?s a loss, but you have to move on,? Laich said. ?The group wants to win. It?s not going to go away.?
With a win, Washington would have tied the Panthers ? who have one game at hand ? for first place in the Southeast Division.
Stamkos had a career-high 51 goals in the 2009-10 season and scored 45 times last season. He has three goals and two assists in his last two games.
?We made a couple of mistakes, especially in the second period against that line with Stamkos and St. Louis,? Washington left wing Alex Ovechkin said. ?When they have a chance to score, they?re going to score.?
Ovechkin had four shots on goal, and hit the post with another drive.
Laich cut Washington?s deficit to 2-1 with an in-close redirection at 9:31 of the second. It was his first goal in eight games.
Pyatt put the Lightning up 1-0 on a rebound goal 2:10 into the game.
Vokoun finished with 21 saves.
?We want to win,? Vokoun said. ?This was a winnable game, and we didn?t get it done. I don?t think anybody can be happy about that. We played the game to the strength of the other team and we got beat.?

Capitals D Mike Green was back in the lineup after missing 18 games because of an abdominal injury. ?It took some time in the first period to get my feel back, but I felt really good,? said Green, who played 14:14. ?After I got going in the first period, going into the second and third, I felt better.? ? Lightning D Marc-Andre Bergeron sat out his sixth straight game, and 15th in 16, due to a back injury. ? Washington RW Troy Brouwer was held off the score sheet. In his last 20 games, all four of his goals have come against Tampa Bay in games on Jan. 13 and 31.
