Google-Branded Tablet Design: 10 Features It Must Have

Google-Branded Tablet Design: 10 Features It Must Have
( Page 1 of 2 )

Tablets are all the rage today. Consumers around the globe are flocking to stores to buy products like the Apple iPad or the Amazon Kindle Fire, and countless companies, seeing that trend, are trying to break into that market. From big companies to small, just about every tablet maker hopes that it can deliver a product that consumers and even enterprise users would be happy to use.

Surprisingly, though, Google is one of the few major companies that hasn?t tried to enter the tablet market with a product of its own. In fact, the search giant has been content to simply offer table manufacturers the Android mobile operating system and then sit back to see if anybody can really make a go of it.

However, in a recent interview, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt mistakenly let it slip that the search company was planning to launch a tablet in the next six months. Now pundits are speculating what will the device offer?

Read on to find out what we?d like to see in a Google-branded tablet:

1. An Android version that?s ready for primetime

One of the biggest mistakes Google made this year was to make Android 3.0 ?Honeycomb? available to its vendor partners before it was ready. When the Motorola Xoom launched, the device fell short immediately because of its poor Android installation. In the Google-branded tablet the search giant must offer an ideal software experience. If it doesn?t, it?ll be in for trouble.

2. End-to-end Google development

Google has in the past used its own corporate branding on smartphones. However, those devices were designed by third-party vendors. If Google is indeed, working on a tablet the company should control all facets of its development. Firms that control the hardware and the software are typically more successful. Just ask Apple.

3. Multiple screen sizes

Although earlier in the year, it seemed that consumers really only wanted tablets with big displays, like the 9.7-inch flavor in Apple?s iPad, the Kindle Fire has thrown that idea on its head. Now, it appears customers are just fine with 7-inch tablets. If Google wants to see its tablet become a success, it should offer multiple screen sizes, including 7- and 10.1-inch offerings.

4. Multiple price points

Along with multiple sizes, it?s important for Google to remember that different consumers want different features and they want them all at varying prices. Therefore, Google would be smart to offer its tablet versions at different prices. A cheap model could go for, say, $199, while a top-of-the-line option could retail for $799. The move could maximize the tablet?s market appeal.

Oil price falls as Saudis trump Iran threat (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices fell on Wednesday, after Saudi Arabia said it will offset any loss of oil from a threatened Iranian blockade of a crucial tanker route in the Middle East.

The U.S. Navy warned that any disruption of traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz "will not be tolerated."

On Tuesday Iran's vice president said that his country was ready to close the Strait of Hormuz ? a vital waterway through which a third of the world's tanker traffic flows ? if western nations embargo the country's oil because of Iran's ongoing nuclear program. The head of the country's navy added on Wednesday that his fleet can block the strait if need be. His comments came as Iran held a 10-day drill in international waters near the strategic route, which is 21 miles wide at its narrowest point.

A Saudi oil ministry official told The Associated Press that Saudi Arabia and other Gulf producers are ready to provide more oil if Iran tries to block the strait. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue. He didn't specify other routes that could be used to transport oil, although they would likely be longer and more expensive for getting crude to the region's customers.

"Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated," said Lt. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, which is responsible for naval operations in the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

Some analysts think the Iranian threats are more rhetoric than reality. "We doubt political posturing will turn into action," energy consultant and trader Stephen Schork said in a report.

"Shutting down the strait ... is the last bullet that Iran has and therefore we have to express some doubt that they would do this and at the same time lose their support from China and Russia," said analyst Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland.

Iran is the fourth largest oil exporter in the world, according to the Energy Department. Most of its crude goes to Asia, with China its biggest customer. Oil provides half of Iran's revenue. Last year that amounted to about $73 billion.

In New York benchmark crude fell $1.98 to finish at $99.36 a barrel. Brent crude fell $1.71 to end at $107.56 a barrel in London.

Oil prices were also undercut on Wednesday by persistent worries about Europe and future demand for oil as the region's economy weakens. The European Central Bank said the continent's banks parked a record $590.72 billion overnight with the ECB, reflecting distrust in the European banking system.

Meanwhile in the U.S. the average pump price of gasoline rose a penny on Wednesday to $3.24 a gallon. That's about 4 cents more than a week ago and 21 cents higher than a year ago.

In other energy futures trading, heating oil fell 2 cents to finish at $2.89 a gallon, gasoline fell 4 cents to end at $2.65 a gallon and natural gas fell 3 cents to finish the day at $3.08 per 1,000 cubic feet.

NBA Commissioner Stern hears boos at Dallas opener (AP)

DALLAS ? NBA Commissioner David Stern opened his lockout-delayed season by hearing boos from Mavericks fans.

Stern was in Dallas for the NBA finals rematch between the Mavericks and Heat, and he was on the court for the start of the Mavs' banner-raising ceremony honoring their first championship. The jeers came as soon as he started speaking, but he quickly turned them into cheers by offering his congratulations to team owner Mark Cuban.

Cuban's often contentious relationship with Stern could've been as much of a reason for the boos as the lockout, which pushed the opener from Nov. 1 to Christmas and cut the season by 16 games.

Cuban and Miami's Micky Arison were among five owners who voted against the labor deal. Stern said "it doesn't send any signal whatsoever" that the two owners in the most recent finals were against the agreement.

Stern said Arison only objected to the revenue sharing. He also pointed out that Cuban was part of the labor relations committee and the planning committee.

"(Cuban) might not have been enamored with the final outcome because it takes away the advantage that overspending can give you," Stern said.

Stern also said he could have done a better job of explaining his reasons for blocking a proposed trade of Chris Paul from the league-owned Hornets to the Lakers, only to later agree to a deal that sent Paul to the Clippers. He said that "lost in the frenzy" over his action was the fact he quashed the deal in his role as the owners' representative looking out for the best interests of the Hornets ? not as the commissioner looking out for the best interests of the league as a whole.

"Our view was that the best thing was for New Orleans to be a young team," he said.

Stern blamed himself for not clarifying that sooner.

"I don't think it affected the integrity of the league," he said. "I do think I could have done a better communications job. ... It's a job that, as the owners' representative, I was stuck with. But I think that it was better to have me do it than a group of owners do it because I have the singular focus of doing what's best."

The booing Mavs fans may not have realized they had Stern to thank for getting Lamar Odom to Dallas. Odom was supposed to have been in the Lakers-Hornets deal; when he wasn't, he was so upset that the club didn't want him that he asked to be traded.

After the Dallas-Miami game, Stern went to Oklahoma City for the opener between the Thunder and Orlando. Magic star Dwight Howard is trying to force his way to the team of his preference, just like Paul did. Asked if that was bad for the league, Stern said it's always happened, using Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain as examples.

"That's the beauty of the soap opera," Stern said. "It will play out like it plays out."

Stern had compliments for another superstar he was about to watch, LeBron James.

"I see a level of acceptance and maturity," Stern said. "He's clearly saying he might've said a few things differently, etcetera, and he's going to let his talent do the talking. I think that's pretty exciting because he's got some pretty exciting talent. So we're happy for him and we're looking forward to how the season winds up."

So, how does he expect the season to wind up?

"I said to Mark, `It's ironic, the most underrated team in the league is the NBA champion,'" Stern said. "I think Dallas has a pretty good roster. ... I said before last season, `I think we're going to have to play the season. We're not mailing the trophy to Miami.' It turns out, we mailed it to Dallas. We'll see what happens this year ? but Miami really seems formidable with those three superstars."

Cuba military searches for survivors after 38 Haitian migrants die on boat

The US Coast Guard managed to rescue 118 of the migrants, but at least 15 were found dead and about 70 others remained missing.

Cuban officials said the Coast Guard and Red Cross continued searching for more survivors around Point Maisi.

Under Cuban immigration procedures, migrants from Haiti who reach the island's coast are usually given food and medical assistance before being repatriated back to Haiti.

Thousands of Haitian boat people had been also arriving in the United States since the early 1970s and settling in Miami, Florida.

But in 1981, Washington and Port-au-Prince reached an agreement under which boats with Haitian migrants are interdicted at sea and their passengers returned to Haiti.

Under the agreement, by 1984, more than 3,100 Haitians had been deported by the United States back to their country, according to the US Library of Congress.

The Bahamas is another destination of Haitian emigrants: an estimated 50,000 Haitians arrived there by boat during the 1980s, a library report said.

Haiti is still recovering from a devastating 7.0-magnitude quake in January 2010 that levelled the capital, killed more than 225,000 people, and left one in seven people homeless in a nation that was already the poorest in the Americas.

The humanitarian situation has been further aggravated by a cholera epidemic that has killed more than 5,000 people, food insecurity affecting 4.5 million and an active hurricane season that destroyed homes and crops.
